Study the Watercolor Magic of John Singer Sargentwith Judy Bates
3 Classes, Tuesday through Thursday, June 4, 5, 6 (deadline for registration May 28) • 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. • $115 plus $5.00 copy, tracing and transfer materials

By studying and copying one of John Singer Sargent’s masterful watercolors, we will unlock the magic of his techniques and use of color that may be applied to your future watercolors. We will have fun in a relaxed atmosphere while gaining an understanding of Sargent’s approach to creating luminous color that ranges from his most transparent passages to his deepest saturated darks. We will re-create a Sargent by tracing and copying one of his watercolors in order to study glazing techniques, mixing techniques on the palette and wet-in-wet, as well as masking and reserve techniques. There will be a strong emphasis on color theory with the use of the color wheel and value scale with lots of exercises and demonstrations by Judy throughout the process on making intentional and successful color choices. A master copy and tracing and transfer paper are provided. Suitable for beginners with some experience to more experienced painters. Direct Flower Painting in Oilwith Judy Bates
4 classes: Monday–Thursday, June 17–20 • 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. • $130

Energize your paintings by loosening up with the direct or alla prima method of painting flowers. We will explore this painterly and spontaneous method of working wet into wet without waiting for the lower layers to dry. Judy will demonstrate each day as we incorporate various direct methods for achieving spontaneous and lively results. Please bring flowers or photographs of flowers to use as references for small paintings. Please keep it simple and do not choose flowers with small fussy details. Use the example above as a guide for your reference flower(s). I will bring some photos from which you can work if you wish and tracing materials for getting the image to your board. We will talk about composition, light, transparency, color and paint application techniques. Suitable for beginners with some experience in oils to more experienced painters looking for a refresher. Bold and Luminous Flowers in Watercolorwith Judy Bates
4 classes: Monday–Thursday, July 15–18 • 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. • $130

This workshop will focus on flower painting as we explore combining color theory and technical expertise to create dynamic and light-filled flower paintings. You will learn to apply paint in a way that maximizes clarity and luminosity to bring life and vibrancy to all of your watercolor paintings in any subject-matter. Each day will consist of demonstrations, exercises and individual instruction. Please bring flowers and/or photos to use as reference for your painting. Please keep it simple and do not choose flowers with small fussy petals. Let’s give ourselves room to make a bold color statement! Let’s Talk about Color Theory in Oilswith Judy Bates

This class using oil paint will take the mystery and intimidation factor out of color theory as we put the principles to work for us in this color workshop. There will be lots of hands-on color exercises using a primary color palette of warms and cools to intentionally mix a full range of beautiful bright colors and equally beautiful dull colors. We will explore the intensity and value of color (the gray scale) and how it impacts our color choices. The goal is to gain the kind of practical knowledge that will allow for intentional mixing by understanding the basic principles of color mixing that can be applied to still life, landscape, portraits—any kind of painting you want to do. Transparent Oil Techniques in Still Life Paintingwith Judy Bates
4 classes: Wednesdays August 7–28 • 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. • $130

Achieve the luminosity of a watercolor while using transparent oil paint and oil glazes that allow the white of your panel to shine through and illuminate your paintings. You will learn to use transparent and semi-transparent paint and subsequent glazing to create glowing luminous paintings in any subject matter. As we study glazing/layering techniques you will gain a stronger understanding of color theory as it relates to intentional color mixing and color and value relationships. You will also learn techniques in paint application for various effects, blending and creating textures as you work from your own still life composition. Methods of the Masters in Oilwith Judy Bates
8 classes: Wednesday Afternoons • October 16–December 11 • 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. • $230 (plus $10 tracing materials and master copy fee to Judy at class)
Study the methods of Dutch Master Balthasar van der Ast (1593/4-1657) as we apply sequential layers of oil paint and mediums while closely observing and copying the beauty of his oil painting of a single tulip in a gold-trimmed glass vase with butterfly and waterdrops. You will gain a deeper understanding of paint application, color theory and glazing techniques using Gamblin products that you can employ in your own work. Judy demonstrates each step of the process along with lots of individual instruction in this relaxed information-packed class. A color copy of Ast’s still life is provided for you to trace onto your canvas in the interest of time. For painters with some experience in oil to more advanced painters. Open Studios in Oilwith Judy Bates
4 classes: Thursday Afternoons • October 17–November 7 • $120
This open studio class in oil is ideal for brushing up on your skills or checking out various techniques in oil painting as you work on a painting of your choice. Participants work individually on whatever subject-matter they choose whether landscape, figurative, still life, flower garden, etc., with group discussions and demonstrations of various oil painting techniques, styles (alla prima, transparent oil, indirect painting, etc.), discussions on materials and mediums, with emphasis on color theory and composition. Bring something in progress or start something new. There will be lots of input from Judy on an individual basis as desired.
