Methods of the Masters in Oilwith Judy Bates
8 classes: Wednesday Afternoons • October 16–December 11 • 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. • $230 (plus $10 tracing materials and master copy fee to Judy at class)
Study the methods of Dutch Master Balthasar van der Ast (1593/4-1657) as we apply sequential layers of oil paint and mediums while closely observing and copying the beauty of his oil painting of a single tulip in a gold-trimmed glass vase with butterfly and waterdrops. You will gain a deeper understanding of paint application, color theory and glazing techniques using Gamblin products that you can employ in your own work. Judy demonstrates each step of the process along with lots of individual instruction in this relaxed information-packed class. A color copy of Ast’s still life is provided for you to trace onto your canvas in the interest of time. For painters with some experience in oil to more advanced painters. Open Studios in Oilwith Judy Bates
4 classes: Thursday Afternoons • October 17–November 7 • $120
This open studio class in oil is ideal for brushing up on your skills or checking out various techniques in oil painting as you work on a painting of your choice. Participants work individually on whatever subject-matter they choose whether landscape, figurative, still life, flower garden, etc., with group discussions and demonstrations of various oil painting techniques, styles (alla prima, transparent oil, indirect painting, etc.), discussions on materials and mediums, with emphasis on color theory and composition. Bring something in progress or start something new. There will be lots of input from Judy on an individual basis as desired. Silverpoint Drawingwith Judy Bates
One Day, Friday February 21 • 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. (snow date February 28) • $75.00 (plus a materials fee of $15 for your silverpoint stylus, silver and treated paper, to be paid to Judy at first class.)
Study the elegant and centuries old process of drawing with a silverpoint stylus containing silver wire onto specially prepared paper, laying down actual silver marks as seen in many drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer and others. There is a resurgence of this exciting and beautiful medium today among many contemporary artists. You will learn to prepare your paper with white or toned grounds, to build values and create textures as well as methods to transfer your drawing to prepared paper. Subject matter will be provided, or you can bring your own photos or items from which to work, no larger than 8 x 10, please. Please bring a light snack for a short break – and enjoy delving a little deeper into discovering the mysteries of the masters. Use form at left to contact Judy with questions. Indirect Painting Methods of the Old and Modern Masters in Still Life in Oilwith Judy Bates

Work from your own still life composition as you study the methods of the old and modern masters in oil using the indirect/sequential layering method of applying paint. We will start with a sepia/umber underpainting. In doing this you will lay a firm foundation for your painting as you gain a deeper sensitivity and understanding of creating variations in value from the lightest areas to the darkest. It is so beautiful and atmospheric that you are tempted to stop there! The next layers in color include color theory/mixing and glazing techniques for achieving added depth and beauty in your paintings. In this relaxed, informal and information packed class, Judy demonstrates each step of the process along with lots of individual instruction. For painters with some experience in any medium to more advanced painters. It is not necessary to have painted a master copy in a prior class of Judy’s to take this class. This open studio class in oil is ideal for brushing up on your skills and taking your paintings to the next level. Participants work individually on their choice of subject matter, so bring something you’re working on or start something new. Whatever your method or subject matter for painting in oil is–bring it on! You will receive guidance on color mixing and creating dynamic compositions along with discussions on techniques, materials and mediums. Have other questions or challenges? Just ask and we will find a solution. There will be lots of input from Judy on an individual basis as desired.
