Fall 2019

If you are new to The Studio School or haven’t taken classes in while, we think you’ll love our larger, more accessible space at Towers Shopping Center in Roanoke! Our new location is on the upper level in the inside mall—just steps away from the Wildflower Restaurant. Long-time Roanokers may remember this space as the former Rams Head Bookstore.

Our new space is large and well-lit, and it has given us the ability to add two additional instructors: Patti Kapral and Bonnie Burt. Class enrollments are increasing and we look forward to welcoming new faces to our mix of students. As always, all levels are welcome!

We encourage you to enroll early—online if possible, but snail mail works too! Either way, we hope you’ll engage your creative spirit and “FIND YOUR JOY” WITH US!

Contemporary Shrines, Image Transfers and Mixed Media Magicwith Gina Louthian-Stanley
3 classes: Mondays, November 11, 18, 25 • 5:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m. • $180.00
Most people immediately connect the word “shrine’ with something either religious or contemplative. For this class, a shrine is a self-contained expression of a single thought or theme. (Family, pet, or even a thought or idea.) That’s a pretty broad definition that leaves the door open for a variety of interpretations.
Choose an image of a favorite family member, pet or animal, subject or object and lift it to a place of honor using mixed media and collage. Participants will learn various ways to create image transfers, and design a textured Shrine base using a Wabi-Sabi technique with natural fibered papers and ephemera. Once transferred and designed you will be able to take these components and construct your personal shrine. Gina provides the ‘arch’ and base panel which measure 6” x 6”, decorative papers, paints, inks, brushes and adhesives, and more.
Bring your own good contrast laser (toner, not inkjet) copies of your choice of images no larger than 4” x 6”, some need to be 2” wide. Recommended highly: Personalize your work further using your personal items, your own stencils, etc. (stamps, small beads, mosaic pieces, and collage materials, or small objects you may choose to bring.) Friday November 15 • 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. • $75
Using found objects such as wood, bark, string, shells, wire, rusty things and anything you can think up… we will make creative, abstract angels. My angel making started in the woods of Maine and they are lots of fun to make! Some can stand alone, some can hang on the wall. All you need for this class is your creativity and some “junk”! I start with shapes and build on my idea with a glue gun and glue. This can be a great shape, design project. Come join the fun!!! Click Here to contact Tracy with questions.register_button

Cold Wax Alchemywith Gina Louthian-Stanley
2 days: Saturday December 7 and Sunday December 8 • 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. • $200 plus $40 material fee for cold wax and other class medium to use, payable to Gina at the beginning of class
Cold wax oil painting mediums create luminous, glowing surfaces, capable of fine detail and subtlety, without the use of heat. We will look at actual examples of various working methods, and create original pieces and explore surfaces and effects possible with the cold wax medium and oil. We’ll use it as a surface treatment to create completed paintings, collages, and incorporate mixed media (including copied photos), by adding wax with various ‘found’ tools. All skill levels would benefit from this class, especially beginners. Bring only your oil paint, and wood panels (or Arches oil paper). Lunch breaks both days.
